What's your sign? What do you think of astrology and horoscopes?
What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?
Submitted by Megan.
Steamed pig brain with sugar syrup. Actually just thinking about it makes me a bit sick...
Another one is boiled chicklets inside the egg. I guess it's no different from eating chicken, but still, to crack open an egg and there is a little cooked baby chick inside.... made me felt bad.
What food or drink do you love when it's cold out? (Recipes and recommendations, please!)
Shabu Shabu. You know it's perfect food for a winter's day when you can't see inside from the windows of the restaurant because it's all fogged up from the steam. Great night out with friends, each with a hot pot of delicious soup to ward off the cold, chilly evening. Almost makes you look forward to the bad weather days.
My favorite ingredients:
Of course, with a side plate of ice cold slithering sashimi just for a contrast of palateSoup base with Szechuan hot peppercorns
Thinly sliced lamb meat, Kobe beef is nice, too...
All sorts of veggies: spinach, bak choi, Chinese cabbage
Fish balls, meat balls, cuttlefish balls, heh heh
Dumplings, fish cakes, eggs, frozen tofu,
Shitaki mushrooms and enokitake mushrooms
Vermicelli noodles
Sauces: lemon soy sauce, hot chili sauce, sha cha sauce, w/ scallions, garlic, Jalapenos
And a shot of soju.
Tell us about your first kiss. Who was it with? How old were you?
His name begins with K, and I was 15. It was at a school dance. It was a double date, my best friend went with his best friend. Heathbar am I remembering this correctly? Whatever happend between you and you-know-who? It's been so many years but it's still a mystery to me...
K and I were slow dancing on the dance floor and making fun of my sister's date. I forgot what his name was, but he was a male soprano and sang like an angel. When he danced he kept on kicking his leg up behind him, like a horse, and we couldn't figure out what the hell he was doing. That look of horror on my sister's face was hilarious. Anyways, we were laughing and the kiss just kind of happened, spontaneously.
We were so innocent back then. Or at least I was. Nowadays I look at my students (which, okay, are a few years older) and they are so jaded and experienced. It's amazing how fast times change.

What are 5 things you'd like to accomplish in the next 5 years?
1) Graduate
2) Please God, please let me graduate!
3) I really really need to graduate. I will sell my soul if it will help me graduate.
4) Run the Central Park Half-Marathon. Preferably with 18-20% body fat.
5) I would really like to get a tattoo and learn how to pole dance. But I should probably be practical and instead aim for a tattoo and a job with enough money to pay for cable.
Is there a friend who you owe a phone call or email? What's stopping you?
The number of correspondences that I need to respond to lies in the double digits. I try to sort them in the following hierarchy:
I am terrible at maintaining my circle. I wish everyone can just do a blog. But at least I never forget a birthday!!
- 24 Hour Turnaround: Maybe if I let the reply marinate for a while I won't sound so suicidal/angry/desperate/hateful/annoyed.
- By the End of the Week: When I'm on my weekend sugar high.
- By the End of the Month: Maybe if I let it sit long enough we will both forget it ever happened.
- Will try to send you a Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa card.
What's the last thing you crafted, constructed or created yourself?
Besides this blog and my dissertation? A crystal beaded lariat necklace.
A while back I saw a beautiful black and white crystal beaded lariat necklace at the Giorgio Armani store in the Bellagio and just loved it. It was so elegant! A nice combination of art deco and sophistication. Especially when adorning those sleek black suits and dresses. But it was $500! That's just crazy, think of how many meals you can buy with $500, even in New York City!
Anyways, so after I went back home, I decided that I will make my own crystal beaded lariat necklace. Giorgio Armani probably has copyright on the exact design, so my version doesn't look exactly like the one in the store. The concept is essentially the same: The body of the necklace is made up of black geometric Swarovski crystal beads weaved together in a snake cord pattern, and the end is closed with a large globe bead, again in geometric style, a touch of rhinestones, and beaded tassels. The necklace is also accented with elongated white pearl beads.
The total cost came to $75 (retail price) plus about 2 hours for laying out the conceptual design and 8 hours of labor. I can totally see why GA charged $500 for that necklace, the manual labor was definitely the most difficult part of the construction process. So here you can see my final product. The design isn't perfect, but I'm fairly happy with the outcomes!
I made this necklace while I was home for Winter Break, so I guess there was no opportunity cost since you never get anything done anyways. But it was interesting because when I was working on the necklace, usually after dinner in the living room, my mom would be mocking me the entire time. She was like, "Oh you'll never get it done, it's such tedius work." Or, "Why are you doing this, aren't you getting your Phd?" While my grandmother was extremely supportive, and even helped me brainstorm the design and construction process. Anyways, thank God my grandmother raised me.
